Surely by now you've heard about the killings in the United States of America. My feelings of ancestry and connection with African Americans and in turn the African American struggle is simple, they are my sisters and brothers.
I also used to have posts about the marginalization of black people, especially when they are killed and lynched by white Americans. I wonder sometimes, much like all social ills (corruption, child & human trafficking, rape, domestic abusers) how ingrained racism must be for some people.
But I've had to remind myself that you cannot cry more than the bereaved. This is a Nigerian saying to say, that I have given the leadership on such matters to the people directly affected by it. I recognise that change must first start internally. I have taken this stance on Nigeria, Nigerian politics, Nigerian politicians...and by extension(due to my affinity) the struggles of African American's. I don't understand It and both issues break my heart.
George Floyd was a 46 year old man who was kneed to death by a white police officer because he was alleged to have submitted a counterfeit $20 note. George moved to Minneapolis from his native Houston a few years ago for greener pastures. He left his family, including his 6 year old daughter behind.
George was 6 feet 6 inches, he was also known to be the kindest man in the room. To his mates, he was "gentle giant". A nickname that stuck from high school where he played football. In the weeks before George was murdered he was a security guard at a restaurant. Due to COVID-19 restrictions, George would struggle to provide for himself and for his family.
George will never see his family again, his 6 years old daughter would not see her Papa again. A man's hopes and dreams for a brighter future has been dashed forever. The great American dream you boast of unattainable for one more man.
Rest in Glory gentle giant, rest easy George. I hope your death results in the dismantling of the system of oppression passed on from generation to generation. I hope your death awakens America's blacks, people of colour and our white allies from the false security of an equal America because there is no equality.
Above all I pray that God comforts George's family and friends. I hope they have the fortitude to bear a loss so great.
